This sunscreen is the 2019 version of the UV Expert Aqua Gel. I’ve picked up the gel version, as I’d thought a gel sunscreen would be light and more suitable for hot, summery weather.
Similarly to the Lancôme UV Expert Milky Bright, which I reviewed a few months ago, this product provides high protection against UVA and UVB rays; SPF 50 and PA++++ (4). It is supposed to hydrate, mattify, and protect against pollution. According to Lancôme’s website, the special ingredient in this formula is edelweiss extract, which is known to be ‘anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, reinforcing skin barrier’. Besides, the edelweiss extract there are other plant extracts which add on antioxidants like rose extract. The formula includes peppermint extract that could possibly irritate some people. The fragrance in this product is a mild, standard Lancôme’s scent.
The sunscreen is very pleasant to use. It’s not necessarily a transparent gel; it’s how I always imagine gel products, but a very light, milky cream. It blends effortlessly into the skin and reapplies equally the same. It leaves no white cast or streaks. I assume it’s all thanks to the large amount of alcohol in this product, but it does not dry out the skin. It’s perfect for humid and hot climates, as you can’t feel it on your skin and doesn’t make you sweat. However, I’ve got a problem with the finish. I apply generous amounts of sunscreens, about half a teaspoon for my face alone. With this sunscreen, I get quite a prominent shine – the glossy, oily finish that you usually tend to get from sunscreens. It wasn’t my experience with the Milky Bright, which looked quite elegant on its own. But, the shiny finish of this sunscreen was easy to cancel out with Innisfree No Sebum UV Cream. Just a drop of the No Sebum UV Cream can absorb any oils and shininess of the Lancôme UV Expert Aqua Gel. You don’t get the shiny finish when you apply a smaller amount of the product, about a quarter of a teaspoon, which is still a pretty good amount. One positive feature of the Aqua Gel, which may make it more attractive over the Milky Bright, is that the Aqua Gel doesn’t have any brightening effect (some may call it a white cast). I would say that people with warmer complexions will appreciate the Aqua Gel more, as the brightening effect of the Milky Bright may not look very appealing on every skin tone. Last not but least, it’s worth to mention that the sunscreen works great with colour stuff like BB creams, cushions, etc.
Overall, it’s a decent sunscreen. It protects well from the sun, spreads quickly, and doesn’t leave any white cast. It’s lightweight, great for hot, humid weather and any season. In my opinion, it’s suitable for all skin types, besides people who don’t tolerate plant extracts or fragrance in skincare. I am not a fan of the finish; I am not sure why the sunscreen makes my skin shiny, perhaps the products I use combined with the Aqua Gel give such a result. I will return to the UV Expert range, but I am going to pick the Milky Bright version next time.
